Feather Finger Mullet

Feather Finger Mullet

Hook: Mustad 34007 1/0
Eyes: 3D plastic eyes
Thread: White 6/0
Tail: 4 white saddle hackles, topped by two black saddle hackles
Body: Palmered white saddle hackle
Wing: Four black saddle hackles

Tying Instructions:

Sharpen the stanless steel 34007 hook and mount it in the vise. Attach the thread near the bend of the hook. Add four white saddle hackles topped with two black saddle hackles for the tail. They should be tied in so the tail is about an inch and a half to two inches long. Attach white saddle hackle to the windings of the tail and advance the thread to about 1/4-3/8 inch of the eye of the hook. Heavily palmer the white saddle hackle to the thread (if necessary tie in anopther saddle hackle to make up the body). tie the saddle hackle off, and trim any excess. For the wing add four black saddle hackles, which sdhould be about as long as the tail reaches. Tie off with a whip finish or half-hitches and cement head. Glue on 3D eyes using E6000 adhesive (found in craft stores, this adhesive will not "craze" or haze the plastic eyes. Variations just vary the color of the wing and tail topping saddle hackles. Yellow, blue, chartreuse, and red are good candidates. If desired a small amount of flash can be added under the wing saddle hackles.

Presentation Tips:

This fly slowly sinks so can be used in very shallow presentations. If schools of finger mullet are present, cast to the edges of the school, to see if you can entice a fish to pick off a straggler. the fly was designed for redfish and speckled trout in some of the shallow water environments in southwest Louisiana.
