Eyes: Turned nickel-plated eyes Thread: white 3/0
Tying Instructions:

This fly is tied to mimic the action of a plastic Slim Slug or Sluggo type baitwhich is very effective on speckled trout, redfish and flounder in southwest Louisiana. The aime of having a tail and a wing, both of not extremely long material was tot try to miic the action of the soft-plastic baits and to avoid having a long wing which could potentially wrap around the hook (a major anonoyance to me when fishing long winged streamers).

Mount the hook in the vise and tie on the turned eyes on top of the hook, about 3/8" back from the eye. Advance the thread to the bend of the hook. If using a rotary vise, rotate so the hook is upside down (if using a stationary hook, you'll have to take the hook out and mount it upside down). Tie in the tail, white calftail or calfbody hair, then 6-8 strands of silver Krystal flash, topped with more white calftail or calf body hair, finally topped with a few stands of olive calftail or calf body hair. Trim the Krystal flash to the same length as that of the tail. Tie in then light purple tinsel for the body and the clear overwrap or v-rib, Larva Lace, s'getti string or mylar tinsel. Wind the thread up to just behind the eyes. Wrap the tinsel around the shank of the hook and tie off just behind the eyes. Then wrap the clear overwrap over the purple tinsel and tie off just behind the eyes. Trim off any excess material. Wrap the trhead to just behind the eye of the hook. Start tying in the wing, in the same order as the tail materials. the wing materials should be bound down bfore the eyes AND after the eyes to achieve the slim profile wanted. Finsih tying off at the head and add the head cement. The Krystal flash portion of the wing should be trimmed to a length as long as the total fly. The profile of the fly should be long and relatively lean. The example here on a Mustad 92611 hook measures 4 3/8 inches (11.1 cm) in length. The construction of this fly gives it very similar action to that of Slimy Slug when retrieved with a "jigging" type retrieve. The relatively soft wing materials impart a lot of action to the fly. It has proved effective here in southwest Lousiana. - MSD
